At Home with Vietnamese Artists
Join our Khiri Travel signature tours in Hanoi for an inside view of unique art forms that embody the history and traditions of this diverse country.
In a country like Vietnam, where culture is so diverse, artistic expression exists in many shapes and forms. From museums, private art collections, or artists opening their homes, the options are many and often in unexpected places.
At Khiri Travel Vietnam, one of our favorite things to do in Vietnam’s cities and what we always recommend for your clients is to get lost walking around through side streets and alleys where they can encounter an unexpected artistic expression or performance. In Hanoi, during our “Explore Hanoi Like a Local Signature Tour”, we guide your travelers through the market at the railway tracks with an eye out for street graffiti. When we were putting this tour together, we couldn’t stop taking pictures of these awesome graffiti murals, so big, bright and colorful!
Our other art tours also offer visits to the homes and galleries of local artists who want to share their knowledge and artistic gifts with your clients. In a small art studio in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, artist Mr. Tran loves to share the history of Vietnamese lacquer ware. He invites us in to show us the material, tools and meticulous techniques involved in lacquer painting. This beautiful fine art is one of the signature arts of the country and can be found everywhere in Vietnam. Mr. Tran’s artistry symbolizes the pride of the Vietnamese people.
Water puppet shows are also a uniquely Vietnamese art form and special way of teaching Vietnam’s culture and history. Dating back over 1,000 years, water puppet performances illuminate everyday life, celebrate national heroes, and recount well-known legends and folklore. The puppeteers are accompanied by instrumental music such as flute, drum and cymbals. In the cities, theaters hold daily performances of this art form, a fantastic way to witness the traditional life of rural Vietnamese villages.
We love supporting local artists. Even if the water puppet show is already super special, we believe that attending a show in the homemade pond at the home of a local water puppet artist is ten times more special! We have a tour to Mr. Liem’s home in the Old Quarter. Employing his family tradition of making water puppets, Mr. Liem can put on a personal performance as well as share his knowledge about the history of this unique puppetry and even allow his guests to try their hand at operating the puppet mechanisms.
