Aviation Boost for Phu Quoc and Danang in Vietnam
The Ministry of Transport opened Vietnam’s newest international airport a few weeks ago. It is located on Phu Quoc Island in Kien Giang in the Mekong Delta. More connections are also going into Danang further north.
The US$777.5 million Phu Quoc International Airport covers 900 hectares and will serve more than 2.6 million passengers yearly.
When at its capacity (expected in 2030), the airport will be able to receive as much as 20 planes and 3,500 passengers during peak demand period and serve up to seven million passengers each year.
The Ministry has closed the former Phu Quoc Airport, some 10 kilometers away from the new one. It could only handle 247,000 passengers per year.
Vietnam Airlines currently has 60 flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc and seven flights from the island town to Can Tho city in the Mekong Delta.
The national carrier will operate five flights a week from Hanoi to Phu Quoc, the longest domestic flight in Vietnam. Private budget carrier VietJetAir is also offering one daily flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc.
Vietnam has eight international airports and 13 domestic ones in operation.
