Back Road Border Crossings: Laos to Vietnam

September 29, 2015 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , , ,

Vietnam is a large country sharing overland borders with Laos, Cambodia and China. Traveling by land is one of the best ways to admire the beauty and breathtaking landscapes of the country. Laos and Vietnam share three border crossing locations. Our favorite is the Na Meo border crossing in Thanh Hoa Province southwest of Hanoi. Whenever we work with a combined program traveling from Laos into Vietnam, we always recommend using the Na Meo crossing and heading for Mai Chau, Vietnam, a lovely town about three hours drive east of the border. Mai Chau is a mountainous area close to Hanoi and gateway to visit the hill tribes and ethnic minorities of Vietnam to enjoy active adventures.

Travelers can enjoy trekking, cycling and local markets while staying in Mai Chau. There are many options for comfortable accommodations in the area. We at Khiri Travel Vietnam prefer the homestays, however, there are good quality hotels as well as small hotels owned by ethnic minority families.

The roads in North Vietnam have recently been improved considerably, however there are still locations undergoing construction and road maintenance. Despite the chance of slow travel, the landscapes that travelers may encounter by overland travel are spectacular. There is not only dramatic scenery but also the opportunity to observe local lifestyles and stop in hidden spots to make the road trip a unique and memorable experience.

Logistically, on most occasions, land border crossings are an easy task. However it’s very important that all foreign travelers have arranged a Vietnam visa before hand as visa on arrival is not permitted at land borders. Visa on arrival can only be arranged when travelers are entering the country via international airports.
