Back to Nature with OurLand on the Kwae Yai River

May 21, 2019 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , , ,

Khiri Travel recently revisited a site in Kanchanaburi’s Wang Dong District, where in collaboration with OurLand last September, we planted over 200 trees and other plants at the local district healing center for monks.

The project, set up with the cooperation of the Wang Dong Community, was part of OurLand’s ongoing efforts to help preserve nature in the area, and while we discovered that a few of the trees had not survived, we were glad to see that most of them are now flourishing!

OurLand is a conservation effort and eco-lodge on the Kwae Yai River that is returning the once commercial land on which it is located back to nature and allowing flora and fauna in the area to thrive. This nature reserve acts as a safe wildlife corridor through which wild animals like elephants can pass safely from the lower half of Salakphra Wildlife Sanctuary to the Kwae Yai River.

Along with its many conservation projects and voluntary activities in the Wang Dong community, OurLand also operates an eco-lodge for those who want to experience the magic of its reserve. Here you can learn more about local environmental issues, like human-elephant conflict and take part in activities like wild elephant tracking, setting up salt licks, bird watching, jungle survival, and many more.

OurLand offers a number of day and overnight packages for guests, who want to experience its nature reserve and take part in meaningful nature conservation activities. While accommodation is rather basic, upgrades are available nearby for those who want a certain level of comfort.

Part of Khiri Travel’s visit was also to learn more about OurLand’s packages, as well as new ways that we can support their valuable conservation work. OurLand offers an experience that is a true delight for nature lovers, where you get to understand what nature conservation is really all about. Among some of the things that we learned was the importance and use of bamboo, how elephants interact, and why salt and other minerals are a crucial part of these gentle giants’ diet.

Khiri Travel is working with OurLand to offer these conservation and educational packages to nature lovers and families with children, who can gain unique insight from this back-to-nature experience.

In Laos, a low population density and rugged terrain has contributed to relatively large areas of forest with diverse flora and fauna remaining untouched. The countryside contains habitat to over one hundred species of large mammals like tigers, Asian elephants and gaurs (wild cattle). Lao people regard the Asian elephant as a symbol of the power and potential of the forest. You can see plenty of images of them in temples and houses.
