Bagan’s Ghosts, Brutal Conquerors and Scary Stories

March 21, 2018 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

Myanmar’s ancient city of Bagan with its ruins of over 2,200 temples and pagodas, attracts thousands of tourists to the Mandalay Region every year, but there is a more ghoulish and macabre side to Bagan’s history that not everyone gets to hear about.

Khiri Travel Myanmar’s half-day tour ‘Ghosts, Superstitious Kings, Brutal Conquerors and Other Scary Stories’, takes you on an adventure to the ancient plains of Bagan where there are some fascinating sites with scary stories of brutal kings, ghosts and princesses, who once ruled or walked the city’s royal streets.

During the tour, our guide will take you to places linked to these hair-raising myths and anecdotes, like the one about the spirit of Tharabha Gate: Is the spirit found there really the soul of a person buried alive under the huge gatepost? How many construction workers had their arms chopped off while building the Dhammayangyi Temple – the largest in Bagan – built by King Narathu in the 12th century, who came to the throne by assassinating his father and elder brother?

Our guide will tell you about these stories and many more concerning haunted ruins – places where no one dares to tread in the dead of night. If you want to find out more about the superstitions, gruesome practices and the scary stuff of past kings and queens, then this tour will give you a fascinating insight into how superstition, paranoia and jealousy ruled the royal roost!

Khiri Travel Myanmar also organises an exciting treasure hunt for children through the market of Nyaung U near Bagan, or you can join a picnic lunch or a boat ride to a hidden cave temple.

Khiri Travel Myanmar’s tours for young people and families alike, really makes Bagan’s history come alive.
