Bangkok’s Chinatown is Food Heaven

February 9, 2015 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , , , ,

During the day, Bangkok’s Chinatown is crowded sidewalks of frenetic commercial activity at stores up and down Charoen Krung and Yaowarat, the two main thoroughfares or Sampeng Lane, a narrow alley lined with small shops. Closing time is when the vendors have had enough or as soon as the sun goes down.

When darkness falls, the crowds head for the end of Yaowarat Road at the traffic circle crowned by the tall Chinese ceremonial gate. The street and side alleys here are full of restaurants and street stall vendors busy serving customers an amazing variety of food. The smells, both familiar and strange, are tantalizing and just looking at all the snack food choices is like a feast for the eyes. We can spend some time sampling local delicacies such as crepe Yipon, dim sum, jab liang (a Chinese sweet medicinal drink), kuay jab, a peppery noodle soup, and homemade tamarind ice cream. This is the opportunity to try something new and different! After our appetites are sated, we can wash down all this snacking with a few beers while listening to live music at the street level terrace of Shanghai Mansion. This Chinatown food tour is a well spent evening indeed!
