After 2 hours of good times with security staff…

When hitchhiking through the Sahara on a surf trip, I got picked up by a real cool dutch couple in their jeep to cross the border from Western Sahara to the Islamic republic of Mauritania. There was limited space so I had to sit on the trunk on top of a pile of bags and boxes.

At the border we got a thorough check by not-to-friendly security staff. I was dragged into their office and asked over and over again if we were smuggling something like drugs or alcohol. Obviously not, i’m not stupid. After 2 hours of good times with security staff with their aviators and AK’s we were let go and entered the stunningly beautiful desert country of Mauritania. After 10 minutes the couple was high fiving each other and they succeeded in smuggling 2 jerry cans of wine…they thought they better not tell me beforehand in fear I would crack.
