Battambang: Showcase of Cambodian Heritage and Art

October 5, 2012 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

Battambang, known for its history and art, is a charming place and the perfect option for a side trip or day tour in combination with a visit to Siem Reap and/or Phnom Penh.

Heritage Tour

This day tour explores the history and culture of Cambodia’s second largest city, Battambang. Your clients will marvel at the country’s best preserved collection of charming, colonial era shop houses as you drive to Kor Village – home to Wat Kor temple and a cluster of Khmer heritage houses. At the temple, your clients can listen and observe the monks practicing their daily chants in a chorus of deep monotone voices. If your traveler’s are lucky, the monks will give them a blessing with holy water from the traditional jasmine flower. The purpose of this blessing is to bestow happiness and good health.

Our tour will also include a stroll along the Stung Sangker riverbank, lined with traditional Khmer style stilted houses. We’ll also take your clients to the north of town where they can see local shops making rice paper, Khmer noodles, rice wine and bamboo sticky rice.

After a local lunch on the river, the tour heads to a winery where visitors will enjoy a leisurely tour of the vineyard and taste some lovely wine samples.

The Bamboo Train

After enjoying their share of “grape juice”, it’s time to head to the east of town to another unique attraction of Battambang called the Bamboo Train. This must do is a unique contraption! Originally built by the French to transport goods, visitors can take a ride on this simple, yet useful bamboo cart pulled along the railroad tracks.

Traditional Dance

This full day ends with an impressive dinner at the social center and art school of Phare Ponleu Selepak. Run by a Cambodian NGO, this Battambang organization uses art, music, dance and circus performances to transform the lives of disadvantaged Cambodian youth. Your clients can dine while watching youthful energy and artistry in a traditional dance performance.
