Biking for a Bite Around Siem Reap

January 19, 2018 by Khiri Travel |

Join Khiri Travel Cambodia’s evening bike tour – just before sunset – that takes you around Siem Reap to sample and savor the delicious variety of local dishes in the lively night markets. At the end of each day Siem Reap’s food stalls and eateries come alive; bursting with weird and wonderful gastronomic delights, as workers prepare to head home and visitors to the town await evening events and dinner.

Starting at 3pm, we first ride to a stall famous for its BBQ beef. After a quick nibble we ride past homes and businesses to enjoy a special delicacy of char-grilled giant snails, with a tofu option available for those who are not quite so partial to snail meat! We bypass the bustle of the smaller neighborhood markets and children going home from school, and head for one of the most popular local night markets, awash with colour and tasty treats.

We set out to sample the variety of foodie options, which include delicacies such as pigs’ ears and tripe, as well as our favorite: fish curry soup. After this delicious detour we ride through some iconic Cambodian countryside to the local fairground where – as the sun sinks – we munch our way through stalls serving up lotus buds; deep fried insects; and a wonderful array of sweet treats and local fruits – some of which have no regular name in English!

After a short transfer we conclude our foodie bike ride with a very special dinner hosting members of the local community in their vegetable garden. From farm to plate we enjoy the conversation over a truly traditional family meal – washed down with rice wine and couple of cool beers for good measure.

At the close of the meal an air-conditioned van transports us back to Siem Reap town, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the evening’s cultural activities in town.
