Blue Chair Cinema: the Luang Prabang Film Festival
At the start of every December, the former royal capital of Laos is transformed into a theater. Screens are rigged on garden lawns, within the walls of five-star hotels, and at a central market. The whole town becomes the perfect setting for celebrating the art of cinema.
The Luang Prabang Film Festival believes in equal access. All screenings are open to the public and free of charge. The main outdoor venue is traditionally at the beginning of the Luang Prabang night market. About 800 blue chairs are set up. Often there are more than 1,000 people per screening. The festival is quickly becoming known as one of the most exotic and exciting locations on the international film festival circuit.
The Luang Prabang Film Festival brings together the boldest storytellers from Southeast Asia. In 2013, five of the films that were screened came from local Lao filmmakers. Film production, being a relatively new industry in Laos, still has many hurdles and does not have large budgets.
Khiri Travel was happy to support the film festival in 2012 and 2013 as official travel partner. Khiri’s policy is to support the local community and promote artistic expression.
