Boat Cruise – Siem Reap to Phnom Penh

November 20, 2017 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

This 3-day tour on a Toum Tiou boat is a totally unique way to travel. Feast on local lunches and dinner as you float your way from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. The boat follows the meandering Tonle Sap through pastoral countryside, and on to the flooded forests and copper-toned waters of the Great Lake. The mysterious atmosphere of the Khmer temples of Angkor replaces the timeless colonial ambiance of Phnom Penh.

Visit Kôh Chen – a small village whose inhabitants specialize in silver and copper smiting. They make ornamental items, including delicately engraved tropical fruits, used in traditional ceremonies at the pagoda or for weddings.

The distant hills of Cambodia’s old capital, Oudong, and its royal stupas can be seen as the boat winds down the river. At Kampong Tralach you’ll visit the enchanting Vihara belonging to the Wat Kampong Tralach Leu pagoda. Dating back to early last century, it’s a modest pagoda that receives very few visitors, but holds some beautiful and unknown murals.

Continuing on to more uncharted territory, you’ll visit the fishing village of Kampong Chnang – almost totally overlooked by tourists because of its remoteness and difficult access. The town is one of the largest fishing ports on the Tonlé Sap. The area is also famous for its pottery – unchanged in style for centuries – produced in sufficient quantities to supply the entire country. The completely self-sufficient village includes a floating school, factories to make ice for fish preservation, a church, pagoda, service station, karaoke bar, police station…all standing above the water.

You’ll overnight on the Toum Tiou under the protection of the flooded forest on your final night – sharing a farewell dinner (and cocktail, of course) with the Captain and Master of the Ship.

Cruise Tonle Sap Lake early the next morning, and on to Phnom Penh – for your next adventure.

Returning to Dine at Chim Sao in Hanoi – A Photo Essay

There is something special about traveling to a place I have been to before.  I love the familiarity.  Feeling my way around the city without a map.  Not looking like a deer in headlights because I know what to expect. What I truly love about these experiences, though, is knowing where to eat.  Returning to […]
