Burma Hero and Independence Icon: General Aung San

September 3, 2015 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , , , ,

Iconic people are a product of history. Myanmar, the largest country of mainland Southeast Asia, has a rich and distinctive history. Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar saw the rise and fall of powerful kingdoms, the British colonial era, the nationalist movement and military resistance until independence in 1948.

As the military leader during the former Burma’s post war nationalist movement, General Aung San was highly regarded but he was tragically murdered the year before independence. Bogyoke (General) Aung San’s early death at age 32, his command over the Burma Independence Army and his statesmanship that negotiated independence from the British made him Myanmar’s national hero. To this day, after decades of military leaders in Myanmar, Bogyoke Aung San heroism continues to inspire his country. Many citizens still carry an old banknote in their wallet that depicts General Aung San.

To honor his legacy and achievements, banknotes are not enough. At the National Museum in Yangon and the Military Parade Grounds in the nation’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw, are known for their larger than life statues of kings from pre-colonial times. General Aung San’s statue is not to be found in either place along with any other modern military leaders. However, there is a museum in Yangon dedicated solely to Bogyoke and his life. Located in the embassy district of Yangon, and not far from the scenic Kandawgyi Lake, the Bogyoke Aung San Museum and his bronze statue are a “don’t miss” highlight in Yangon.

Khiri Travel Myanmar offers an iconic City Tour of Yangon that not only includes a walking tour through the city’s downtown heritage buildings, but can also include a visit to Bogyoke’s Museum and Kandawgyi Park. An additional honor to Myanmar’s iconic hero, his former office is now a restaurant called the House of Memories, in which we can stop for lunch. German travelers (or others!) might be delighted to visit the Goethe Villa, the former headquarters of the Burmese independence movement that now hosts art exhibits.
