Returning Home: One Artist’s Journey of Fulfillment

September 4, 2015 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , , , , , ,

Born in the tumultuous and war ravaged times of Cambodia’s past, artist and designer Lim Muy Theam was given a new lease on life when he was granted asylum in France in 1980 after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. After studying Interior Design at the Ecole Boulle and Painting at the Fine Arts School in Paris, Theam decided that rather than stay in one of the artistic meccas of the world, he would do what few others had done before him and return to his homeland.

Cambodia - Iconic - Theam - house

When Theam first arrived back in Cambodia more than fifteen years ago, the rich artistic traditions of the Khmer people, some dating back more than a thousand years had all but vanished. After dedicating his life to reviving the traditional arts and crafts of Cambodia, Theam has embarked on a new mission of perusing his own artistic vision and creating new creative traditions. Focusing on painting and training protégé artisans, Theam has also opened up his own house and created a real working space dedicated to the creation and exhibition of Cambodian Arts and Crafts. Blending tradition with innovation, Theam has created inspired objects for home, leisure and workspaces exuding love for the beauty of Cambodia, with distinctly modern creative edge.

Visiting Theam’s home is only a ten-minute trip outside of Siem Reap. One of the few Cambodian-owned galleries, Theam’s house is filled with beautiful lacquer paintings, modern clay and traditional wooden carvings; all housed in a beautiful custom Cambodian house that is more of a tropical oasis than an artistic workspace and gallery.

On our Siem Reap Art and Designers Tour your travelers will be able to wander through this gorgeous space on a privately guided artistic journey with Theam’s sister, Maddy. She will give your travelers personal insight into his preferred mediums, detailed information about the art on display and introduce your travelers to the artisans Theam is currently mentoring in his workshop.
