Escape to The Chao Phraya River: Bangkok’s Urban Oasis

July 2, 2015 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , , , , , ,

Bangkok is known more for its wonderful temples and vibrant nightlife rather than its green spaces. The Bang Krachao Island (or Bang Kra Jao/Bang Krachao) in the Chao Phraya River, also known as the “Green Lung of Bangkok” is one area of town that bucks the trend and feels a million miles away from the high rises and hustle and bustle of downtown.

Reached via a quick local ferry across the Chao Phraya River, this green lung, located only minutes from the city center, is protected from development and provides an insight into rural life in Thailand. Khiri Travel Thailand can help travelers hire a bike or book a guide and tour to explore this secret escape from the concrete jungle of Bangkok.

Exit the ferry pier and start cruising along the raised pathways through the cool breeze and greenery, meeting friendly locals and all sorts of different wildlife. There are brightly colored butterflies, birds and the occasional monkey. Don’t be surprised to see some prehistoric looking monitor lizards, some as much as one meter long! If it’s a weekend, travelers have the bonus option to visit the Talad Bang Nampung floating market.
