Expanded Pakse Airport Now Serving Larger Aircraft

August 15, 2010 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under:

Pakse international airport officially re-opened its services on 1 June 2010. Lao Airlines (QV) will resume its flights to and from Bangkok, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap and Vientiane as per its summer schedule.

Pakse International Airport was closed twice recently for repairs and resurfacing work on its runway. The airport briefly re-opened November 2009 until February 2010 to accommodate visitor arrivals during the high season. The latest closure and upgrades enabled larger aircrafts such as Boing-737 and Airbus-A320 to use the airport. The runway was extended from 1,650 x 36 metres to 2,400 x 45 metres. This project was funded by the Thai government. During the closure, Lao Airlines diverted all flights to Savannakhet 230 kilometres north of Pakse. This diversion heavily affected the local tourism industry as Pakse served as a hub for tourists visiting Champassak’s Sipandone (4,000 islands) area, the UNESCO World heritage site of Vat Phou, and the Bolaven plateau and coffee growing area.

The reopening of an upgraded Pakse airport is being warmly welcomed by everyone in the travel industry sending clients to southern Laos.
