Experience Island Life in Krabi Far from the Crowds

December 21, 2017 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , , , , ,

In cooperation with the Islanda Village Resort, Khiri Travel Thailand now offers an excellent off the beaten track option to Koh Klang in Krabi province in southern Thailand. The island is great for clients who are interested in doing something different. It is also suitable for families.

Koh Klang is a charming, peaceful island, located a mere five minutes by boat from Krabi town. The island is mostly populated by Muslim families. Most families earn their income from fishing. Others are rice farmers whose organic sangyod rice is renowned for its unique taste.

Koh Klang is also one of Krabi’s most accomplished communities for hand- made arts and crafts.

Although the island is located in the clear blue waters of the inner Andaman Sea, it does not offer ordinary beach activities. This island is about getting close to local island life and learning folk customs along the inner Andaman Sea.

Think about a bicycle ride, followed by a kayaking trip in the rich mangrove forest, observing local fishermen at work. Think about a tour through the rice field and making a spicy sauce in a traditional rice mortar and pestle in the kitchen. Think of a visit to Mr. Sombun Manka, producer of Koh Klang’s famous model fishing boats and a very skilled one. (His late father was a master boat-builder known along the length of the Andaman coast.) If interested, clients can even try a hand at assembling a model boat themselves.

And last but not least, Khiri takes clients to meet the flamboyant and cheerful grandmother Prajim Lekdum and her textile workers. They are proud members of the katik textiles group. It is an honor for them to show clients the steps it takes to produce a katik cloth. Firstly, a cloth will be printed, using patae techniques, before the women manually add additional designs using batik techniques. Travelers can design and paint their own katik. When it is ready, grandma Prajim will dye and boil it for them and make sure it’s ready to be sent to their hotel the following day.

Khiri can provide many more travel options in Krabi and Koh Klang to suit different budgets and priorities. Please feel free to contact  [email protected] or information in yellow box below for more options, information and bookings.
