Exploring the Culture and Nature of Central Java

July 19, 2019 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

When you think about health and wellness options in Indonesia, immediately Bali springs to mind. However, those who dare to look a little further will find many alternatives, such as in the heartland of the island of Java. Here among old coffee plantations and heritage buildings, plenty of opportunities present themselves for relaxation, wellness, and other indulgences, such as the delicious local food.

Beautiful hotels like the MesaStila Resort & Spa offer great options to relax and detox from daily life. But in Java, a tour of the senses doesn’t have to begin and end at your resort. Central Java offers some fabulous trails for hiking to explore the natural beauty of the region. Alternatively, you can opt for a bike adventure, riding along the tracks of old plantation trains, crossing rivers and abandoned bridges, and passing through rice fields and sleepy villages.

Central Java is the island’s cultural, geographic, and historical heartland. Universities, dance schools, ceramics, handicrafts, and textiles give the region a rich culture and make it a truly exciting place to shop for bargains and fascinating artifacts. This is also the place of the famous Borobudur temple, a 9th century Mahayana Buddhist temple, not far from the town of Muntilan.

A guided visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site – the largest Buddhist temple in the world – is a highlight for many. Performing arts is still widely practiced in this region, and traditional dance dramas (wayang orang), or shadow puppet (wayang kulit) performances are easy to find with your guide.

And if you want to see stunning nature, Central Java has mountains stretching lengthwise from the west to the east, including Mount Slamet (3,428 m), Mount Perahu (2,585 m), Mount Sindoro (3,135 m) Mount Sumbing (3,321 m), Mount Merapi (3,142 m), and Mount Ungaran (2,050 m). At the foot of many Javanese mountains, you will find pleasant and cool highland plains with beautiful panoramas, such as Baturaden, the Dieng Plateau, Bandungan, Kopeng, Tawangmangu, and Solo.

Central Java is also where the island’s first major Indian-inspired civilization originated, serving as the stronghold of the great Islamic sultanates in the walled city palaces of Yogyakarta and Solo. It is here in the heart of Java that the island’s cultural traditions can be most readily observed – making it a destination in this island nation not to be overlooked.
