Grapes and Palms in the Battambang Countryside

October 10, 2013 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

The only vineyards in Cambodia are located in Battambang on the road between the Angkorian temple of Phnom Banan and the city of Battambang.

Each year the winery produces several thousands bottles of red and white wines, Cambodian brandy and fresh grape juice. Several long vineyards are located behind a colorful outhouse. This is also the location where the wine is bottled. Visitors have a chance to taste and buy any wines (or brandies) they like.

The owner of the vineyard started growing fruit grapes in 2000 as an alternative to the rice and oranges that dominate agriculture in Battambang. Her first vintage was in 2004. Harvest time comes twice a year and the estimated 8,000 vines are picked by hand.

If your clients travel to Battambang, make sure they don’t miss a visit to the Prasat Phnom Banan Winery. The sight of a vineyard flanked by palm trees is a memorable one.

We believe that the peaceful atmosphere around the vineyards makes it a nice place to stop before a visit to the temple of Phnom Banan. Further along the road are even more vineyards.

Nearby Wat Bai Dom Ram, a modern temple where large fruit bats hang from a great tree at the entrance, is also worth a visit.
