Greening the Company, One Tree at a Time

April 9, 2014 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: ,

On April 4th 2013, thirty Khiri Group staff took steps towards greater sustainability by planting 100 mangrove trees to offset carbon emissions.

As the representatives of Khiri Travel Group, the team went to Bang Pu Nature Education Center near the Chaopraya river mouth, 40 km south of downtown Bangkok.

Mangrove Forests in Bang Pu play a vital role in protecting the natural environment in one of Thailand’s most important deltas, as well as being a seasonal dwelling for over 190 kinds of birds that migrate from China and Mongolia every year. Due to rapid industrial and urban development in the area, the ecological condition of Bang Pu has gravely deteriorated.

The adventure began at noon on a very hot and sunny day. Despite the heat and muddy conditions, the task was accomplished within just one and a half hours. One tree can absorb approximately 800 kg of CO2 during its 40 year lifetime. The potential of carbon reduction from this activity could reach 80,000 kg of CO2, doubling the amount of carbon emissions the group accounted for in 2013.

Khiri’s tree planting project is certified by Plant a Tree Today (PATT), a UK registered charity and Thai foundation established to encourage tree planting to combat climate change. The PATT’s Bang Pu Program aims to regenerate an ecologically damaged mangrove area through reforestation and conservation. This is an important task as more than half of the world’s mangrove forests have already been destroyed and less than 1% of the remaining areas have any form of protection.

Thanks to the Khiri Group team’s efforts another step has been taken towards greater sustainability of its operations and a fun day was had by all!
