His Majesty’s Coronation Day Set for Early May
The Thai Royal Coronation, which takes place next month in a series of ceremonies between May 4-6, is a great opportunity for those visiting Thailand to join local people and be a part of this once in a lifetime event.
It has been almost 70 years since Thailand witnessed a Royal Coronation. The last one for King Bhumibol Adulyadej took place in 1950 on May 5th – a very ornate and colorful occasion. The coronation for His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn next month takes place more than two years after His Majesty succeeded his father King Bhumibol, who died at the age of 88, following a reign of seven decades.
The Royal Coronation will begin on May 4, with the King first granting an audience to members of the royal family, privy councilors, cabinet members and senior government officials. The next day, His Majesty will be on a royal parade in Bangkok.
Celebrations then continue on May 6, with a special appearance of His Majesty on the balcony of Phutthaisawan Prasat Throne Hall at the Grand Palace. Finally, an audience with diplomats will be granted by His Majesty at Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall, bringing the celebrations to a close.
If you have clients booked to visit Thailand in early May, please be aware that all areas around Sanam Luang and the Grand Palace will be closed for five days, from May 2-6. Khiri Travel will ensure that alternative arrangements are made during this period for its customers who are scheduled to visit the Grand Palace and/or other attractions in this part of the Thai capital.
In all other areas of Bangkok, transport, tourism and hospitality services will be functioning as normal, as well as throughout the rest of Thailand. However, banks and some government offices will be closed from May 2-6. Thailand’s official public holiday this year is on May 6, the last day of the ceremonies.
The Royal Coronation is a joyous occasion for the Thai people and you will see many wearing yellow shirts during this time, as part of the nationwide celebrations. If your customers would like to participate, they are welcome to wear yellow, the royal color, from April to July.
Khiri Travel will keep you informed of any possible updates or changes regarding the Royal Coronation Ceremony.
