Hue City Seen Through Native Eyes

July 23, 2018 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

In next month’s newsletter, Khiri Travel Vietnam will introduce its new Signature Tour for Hue, where we once again add Khiri’s special brand of authenticity to create a day giving you a real glimpse into life in Hue, looking not just at its past, but what lies ahead.

As we put together the finishing touches of this new tour, we take a moment to speak to one of our top guides in the city, Mr Anh, about local life, what it was like growing up in Hue and what makes it an unforgettable destination during any visit to Vietnam.

KTV: You have lived in Hue all your life, what makes Hue so special to you?

Mr Anh: Hue is a center of learning. The people here are determined and want to better themselves and their city – they are very proud to be a part of it. Despite the anguish of recent history, Hue has retained its identity and pride.

KTV: How does the history of Hue play a part in shaping Hue today?

Mr Anh: Hue is a melting pot of cultures. Influences from India and China give Hue a distinctive feel compared to other locations in Vietnam. You can see how the Perfume River splits the city from the ‘Old Town’ north of the river and the ‘New Town’ to the south. With Hue being the ancient capital of Vietnam, the remnants of these civilizations are always present in our minds. Recent history also plays huge part of our character, but we see this as an opportunity to move forward and improve our city.

KTV: Why should guests visit Hue?

Mr Anh: The obvious reason is that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. There is so much history to learn about in Hue, but that is not the only reason. Hue is also a hugely artisanal city. Many different types of art are practiced here and small communities specializing in specific skills can be found around the city. If you need to relax a bit, the beach is only 20 minutes from the city too!

KTV: What are two things that you can’t find in the guidebooks that you have to see while in Hue?

Mr Anh: Truc chi is an art form using pulp from various plants to create distinctive and varied patterns. It is something really rare and seeing the delicate and intricate patterns is something you will love. I think you also need to get out of your car or off your bicycle and take a little walk around the local communities. We are really friendly people and we love to meet visitors and show them our city.

KTV: When you have a weekend off, how do you like to spend your free time?

Mr Anh: Hue is a very green city. There are lots of parks and streets are often lined with trees. This is especially true in the Old Town where you can turn a corner and suddenly be faced with a beautiful pond covered in Lotus flowers. I love to take things slowly, find a quiet spot and relax with a coffee and good book.

A destination not to be missed, Hue has so much to offer aside from the typical tourist hotspots. The atmosphere and pace of life is addictive and we encourage everyone to make it part of your trip to Vietnam!
