In Sri Lanka: Handfuls of Understanding About Rice

February 4, 2015 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

Rice, the ubiquitous staple of Sri Lanka is served in almost every meal, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Combined with a seemingly endless variety of curries, rice is essentially the basis for most meals in their food culture. Found in the varieties of red rice, brown rice and white rice, Sri Lanka has six main varieties of rice that are grown and consumed.

Getting your hands dirty during meals is standard, as cutlery isn’t used at all by the locals and eating with your hands is standard. Khiri Travel Sri Lanka invites travelers to really immerse themselves in the local cuisine during our Hiriwaduna village tour. Starting with a walk through the village to really get in touch with the local way of life, your travelers will then be summoned to join an authentic local cooking class in the village.

The trek begins with an awesome walk along the bund of a wewa or manmade reservoir. The reservoir itself, the surrounding scrub jungle, marshland and village are a hive of activity in the early morning and evening. The amazing sounds of birdlife, scatterings of butterflies and possible sightings of crocodile only add to the charm of seeing the villagers as they go about their early morning tasks of fishing, or washing clothes at the periphery of the lake. Travelers will get to spend time with a Sri Lankan family, learn how to cook traditional recipes in a cooking workshop, eat with their hands, and in general, enjoy a brief involvement in this different lifestyle.
