Insights into Mountain Village Life in Central Vietnam

March 21, 2014 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: ,

Khiri Travel Vietnam is on a quest to discover those hidden must-visit places in the country. We recently went to Central Vietnam and can now present you this new Khiri signature day tour of a two-hour drive from Hoi An. The road roams through spectacular landscapes with paddy fields before we reach the quaint villages of our destination.

First stop is on a nearby hill. Doors of a house, typical to this region, swing open and residents welcome our group into their home. They proudly show their heritage with a beautiful wood-carving panel with Chinese symbols in mother of pearl. It has remained untouched for more than 200 years. Other remnants of the past (and present) are colorful flower and bird carvings. To reach the second house, guests will have to walk a stone path. These rocks will take visitors to meet the kind of personality they probably never met before. In the past, villagers were tiger hunters at a young age. Now, several years older (and a lot wiser) they open their doors for us and will tell guests everything they like to know about this controversial activity of yesteryear. Expect the men to come up with entertaining stories on how they used to trap tigers using just a net and a stick.

The third house we visit is owned by a medicine man. Here, guests can see the healing characteristics of different kinds of herbs. We make sure there is enough time to talk with him, learn more about the village traditions, and sample the herbs. If the opportunity arises, guests may even get medical advice.

While visiting the fourth and fifth house, travelers can contemplate woodcarvings with animal figures such as deer or bats. The owner of the fourth house is a follower of the Tao Dai religion and he keeps a beautiful house amidst a jackfruit wood.
