Lessons learned – guide training in Sambor Prei Kuk

October 5, 2010 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: ,

Khiri Reach, the not-for-profit arm of Khiri Travel, and GTZ (German Development Cooperation), have launched a community tourism project to promote the little-known 8th-10th century Khmer ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk in central Cambodia. The objective of the site is to stimulate tourism in the area, which will help to reduce poverty by generating jobs and income for local communities.

Therefore six local guides and ten students from Kg. Chheuteal High school joined the guide training, which took place at Kg. Chheuteal High school and in Sambor Prei Kuk itself.

The main goal of the training session was to enable local guides and students; and further their knowledge of Sambor Prei Kuk’s history and culture and its surrounding nature. Therefore lessons in site interpretation, local history & tradition, nature and English language were conducted by several specialized teachers from the area.

Local guides and students were able to practice their knowledge and information at the spot. This gave them an authentic experience and feeling for the site and how to lead and explain Sambor Prei Kuk and its reach natural, cultural and architectural past to tourists.

During the outdoor workshop, the trainees learned from Mr. Nrom (local community board lecturer), that about 90 different kind of trees grow in the Sambor Prei Kuk area and that most of the trees are used either for construction, medicinal purposes or as food addition.

Linda Oum from Khiri Cambodia, especially liked the team work assignment, where they had to interview elderly people about their lives around Sambor Prei Kuk area and their memories of past times.
