Luang Prabang: Five Days of Insights and Serenity

Fancy a break in the charming northern Laotian river town of Luang Prabang,  this five-day heritage town and environs trip will suit curious travellers committed to deeper insights.

Five days allow a perfect time to get to know this UNESCO protected world heritage site. A friendly guide takes clients out for a discovery of the town’s major sites. Here are a few highlights. There is for example Wat Xieng Thong, an exquisite 500-year-old temple and the best example of classic Luang Prabang style.

Walk the back alleys and through temples compounds, where you can soak up the ambience. Feel free to ask the locals questions as they go about their daily lives. We visit the National Museum and Phousi Hill with its fine views.

In the morning we rise early to witness the sacred ritual of alms giving to the monks. At the crack of dawn and as part of the morning ritual of many a Laotian, monks from different temples come out to receive alms from the people. The morning market at this time is getting started as well, so we pay a visit here before we return to the hotel for breakfast.

The day is also filled with a visit to the Pak Ou Caves and the idyllic turquoise pools of the Kuang Si Waterfall. At the Sunbear Refuge we allow you some time to learn more about the (sad) poaching of endangered creatures.
Although historically known as the “Land of a Million Elephants,” the elephant is gradually decreasing in numbers due to human development.

Khiri Travel Laos takes clients to visit the Elephant Village. It invests in community eco-programs to give Lao elephants a new home. As forests disappear, the elephants used to log them can become neglected. The aim of the project is to give these elephants a secure future.

Experienced mahouts (trainers and care-givers) and veterinarians help the elephants adapt to their new environment. We tour the project and enjoy an hour-long ride on the back of one of these wonderful creatures. Venturing into the beautiful Lao countryside, stop at the cascade falls of Tad Sae, before returning to the camp and back to town.

After a long day we return to the peacefulness of our accommodation. We stay in an elegant contemporary boutique hotel with great views of Mount Phousi. Our superior room is equipped with a docking station for your iPod, cotton bathrobes, and lemon grass scented bathroom amenities. Your terrace or balcony offers great views of the surroundings.
