Spotlight On Interview - Somphone - Laos

Please tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Somphone and I am from Ban Hadhien in Luang Prabang, Laos. I am 35 years old. In my free time I enjoy watching TV and talking with my children.

What is your job with Khiri Travel?

I have worked as a Tour Guide with Khiri Travel Laos since 2010. I enjoy working in the service and tourism industry and work mostly with travelers from the USA because I am bilingual in Lao and English.

How do you exceed the expectations of the clients?

I like to make sure they are happy and enjoying their tour. This takes good communication. I observe and try to find out what are their special interests. My part is to keep them informed and of course I tell them about Laos, our traditions and trends.

[su_quote cite=”Chris D. | USA Travel Agent”]Somphone had a great sense of humor and his knowledge of Hindu and Buddhist mythology and of Laos, border-lined encyclopedic. Again, Somphone talked with us about his family, kids who are away at college, and his daily life when not guiding.[/su_quote]

What is special about the Khiri Signature Experiences?

For Signature Experiences, I make sure to give the guest all the details because these tours are our specialty. These excursions are unique for example with sumptuous meals—most of the time we use organic vegetables because they are the best food we can buy.

What extras do you do for special guests?

For honeymooners, I can always recommend a nice restaurant with a romantic atmosphere. For tours with children I do extra preparation such as find suitable restaurants and make sure to use my sense of humor to keep everyone relaxed. I can entertain the children by talking to them about traditional toys, like the ones made by hand.
