More Air Connections Within the Greater Mekong Region
New air routes are opening up to connect different countries within the Greater Mekong Region. Regional airlines recognize the increasing demand for fast and efficient connections between destinations such as Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar.
Until the 1980s the route was already in use, but due to the decline in passengers, Lao Airlines chose to stop its Vientiane-Yangon connection. Now with the increasing popularity of Myanmar, the airline has reopened the route. From October this year, the sector is back on after an absence of two decades.
Myanmar Airways International also has plans to open a connection between Yangon and Luang Prabang. The airline currently has flights to international destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Danang, Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh (code sharing).
Vietnam’s national airline Vietnam Airlines launched its first flight between Danang and Siem Reap at the beginning of July. The 68-seater ATR72 planes now fly daily between Cambodia’s Angkor-era temples and the white beaches of Danang. From Danang airport it is a short drive to the historical city centers of Hoi An and Hue. The flight takes two hours and 25 minutes and departs from Danang at 2.10 pm and back from Siem Reap at 5.15 pm.
