Navigating the Backstreets of Captivating Colombo

June 22, 2018 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: ,

Like any major urban destination, most visitors arriving in Colombo plan to get out of the city as quickly as possible to avoid the crowds, congestion, and all the other predictable reasons for avoiding a large metropolis. But Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and largest city also has some fascinating places worth visiting that will give you some real insight into its people and daily life.

When it comes to city dwellers, you can always find someone who cares enough about their own town to delve deeper into its makeup and discover its true essence. Colombo has just such a person – our guide Rashan – a true local, who will lead you to parts of Colombo that you just wouldn’t normally get to see.

Called appropriately Rashan’s Walk, this adventure will take you to Galle Face Green, an ocean-side urban park, with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and city skyline, and then on to some fascinating districts like Slave Island, where Rashan will walk you down alleys and side streets to see the real ‘face’ of the city.

Since the country’s civil war came to an end nearly a decade ago, Sri Lanka has flourished and many parts of the city are rapidly undergoing ‘development’, so now is the time to visit this metropolis and discover its architectural gems and local character before it’s too late!

Our favorite part of the program is walking through the crazy streets of Slave Island. You will meet a lot of local people here and learn about what they do. No frills or scripts – simply local life as you see it for yourself.

Rashan will also bring you to try out some local food, like Kottu Rotti – an everyday Sri Lankan meal not to be missed – best enjoyed at a street ‘food joint’. And if the time is right, you might even be able to drop in on a pooja prayer ceremony, held in a Hindu temple, or kovil.

The best way to describe Rashan’s Walk is ‘Colombo unveiled’ – a peek into the lives of this city’s people with Rashan – a man who is truly proud of his roots and keen to connect you with one of the world’s most friendliest cities.

This tour is a fun adventure for almost anyone, including families and groups of friends, who are keen to experience the true essence of a place and its people.
