Yala National Park, famous for having the highest density of wild leopards in the world along with deer, peacocks, bear, and hundreds of species of birds, is truly an amazing place to see wildlife. However, this park’s popularity breeds overcrowding, especially when the number of jeeps on safari cause traffic jams not unlike the urban scene most visitors are trying to escape!

So how do guests get off the beaten track while visiting this popular national park? One of Khiri Travel Sri Lanka’s safari suppliers operates a semi-permanent camp adjacent to the park. With a limit of six tents, the experience remains private, uncrowded and quiet. As darkness falls, campers can gaze at the stars lighting up the night sky.

Khiri’s safari guides use a back entrance to the park where there are way fewer vehicles than at the main entrance. The expert naturalist knows the back roads of the park where travelers on safari can ride for hours without encountering other vehicles. The only downside is there is less collaboration from other safari jeeps for spotting the elusive leopards. However, on the upside, travelers will see so many other animals now manmade disturbances are minimized.

At one point we did venture into the main tourist area of the park to get a glimpse of a leopard– along with all the other cars. But, being in a traffic jam and inhaling exhaust fumes definitely ruined the magic of the wildlife experience. We quickly went in search of other animals.
