Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge, Kalimantan, Indonesia

Tanjung Puting National Park is a place of stunning biodiversity, a protected area of tropical coast and peat-swamp forest in Central Kalimantan that is home to Camp Leakey and the iconic Bornean orangutan. At Camp Leakey there’s no better option than to stay at the rustic Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge.

Blending naturally with the surrounding jungle environment, Rimba boasts 35 comfortable rooms that are divided into three categories: Diamond (3 rooms), Emerald (12 rooms) and Amethyst (20 rooms). The ecolodge’s state-of-the-art solar energy system, with its backup generator for overcast days, provides electricity 24 hours a day. Rooms are air-conditioned with modern showers and toilets, and satellite internet is also available at the office.

For those with more appetite for adventure, there’s also the option to stay onboard the boat that brings you to Camp Leakey along the mangrove-lined Sekonyer River. The company that runs special cruises to the camp has more than 10 years’ experience operating eco-cruises on Kalimantan’s rivers in their traditional ‘klotok’ riverboats.

The riverboats come in various shapes and sizes but in general, they fall into two categories: those with open decks and those with cabins. Open deck klotoks turns their upper viewing deck into a sleeping deck at night, with mattresses and mosquito netting. Klotoks with cabins provides more comfort with in-room air conditioning, en suite bathrooms, and western-style toilets. Rooms are also fitted with spring mattresses, reading lights, quality sheets, bedcovers, towels, and toiletries, while windows have sliding shutters for privacy.

Guests can charge their phones and cameras, either at plug sockets in the cabins or on the viewing decks of these boats. Highly praised food is also served on board, and a knowledgeable English-speaking guide accompanies guests on each boat.
