The Myst Dong Khoi, HCMC, Vietnam

The Myst Dong Khoi is a welcome luxury retreat in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City with a contemporary design and traditional elements that make use of local art and crafts, as well as historical artifacts, such as interesting objets d’art sourced from historically important sites like Saigon’s former shipyard, Ba Son. At The Myst, you will feel very much at the center of city life, with the scents, sounds, and tastes of charismatic Saigon only steps away from the hotel.

Situated on tree-lined Ho Huan Nghiep Street near the Saigon River – and only a stone’s throw from historic Dong Khoi Street – guests can wander along the picturesque riverfront, visit the Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral, or the Reunification Palace. Nguyen Hue Walking Street is also close by with its fascinating bars and boutique shops.

Peaceful rooms with beautiful wooden floors, combine modern and traditional elements that transport you to go back to the days of former Saigon. Traditional wooden furniture sits alongside modern amenities, including flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea and coffee-making facilities. All rooms offer en suite bathrooms with traditional tubs, while some rooms feature private balconies with miniature hanging gardens. Suites have the luxury of a river view, with some also sporting outdoor tubs, while other rooms offer impressive city views.

Rosewood Bangkok, Thailand

A visually impressive building architecturally, the Rosewood Bangkok’s contemporary form is inspired by the wai, the famous Thai hand gesture of greeting. Thai culture is also the inspiration for the Rosewood’s interior design and water features – a tribute to the Thai capital, which grew up around a network of canals and was once known as ‘Venice of the East’.

Located in the heart of downtown Bangkok on Ploenchit Road, the 30-story 5-star hotel is directly connected to the BTS Skytrain’s Ploenchit Station. Its 159 rooms – including 24 unique suites and villas with private pools and terraces – offer an intimate, secure and private ambiance in the heart of Bangkok. Personalized service is an important part of the Rosewood’s concept, with each guest personally welcomed and treated as if they were returning to their own home.

The Rosewood also offers a dynamic range of dining outlets from its contemporary Nan Bei Chinese restaurant with dishes from both northern and southern regions of China to its Lakorn European Brasserie, an all-day western dining venue.  G+O is an upscale café with an emphasis on healthy, organic cuisine, while Lennon’s, adjacent to the outdoor pool on the 9th floor, is a stylish ‘speakeasy’ tucked behind a whiskey library, with an extensive collection of vinyl classics. The hotel also features Sense, a Rosewood Spa and sanctuary with treatments that draw from Thailand’s long heritage of healing culture.

Sempiak Villas, Selong Belanak, Lombok

Sempiak Villas is a luxury resort located in Selong Belanak, a beautiful bay with sandy white beaches in a largely uninhabited part of Lombok. It is only a 30-minute drive from Lombok’s international airport in Praya and is easily reached by regular flights from Bali, Jakarta, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.

Sempiak Villas is the only luxury accommodation located near the beach in the area, offering guests a beautifully natural and comfortable experience. The carefully constructed wooden villas, each of which has been individually designed, are perched atop Sempiak Hill, surrounded by landscaped gardens.

Particular attention has been paid to the design of Sempiak Villas, with all-natural materials such as coconut wood and local stone to ensure that the buildings complement the surrounding area. Each air-conditioned villa has a wide, expansive veranda boasting panoramic views and comes with such amenities as a stereo, tea, and coffee making facilities, fridge, safe and drinking water dispenser.

The resort also boasts a signature spa at the heart of which is the Spa Sanctuary – a beauty lounge overlooking rural rice or soybean fields, depending on the season. The building itself is inspired by a traditional Joglo, a Javanese house – well-known for its extended roof area.

Sempiak Villas has a policy that does not permit children under the age of 12 to stay up on the hill at the resort.

Ananta Inle Resort, Inle Lake, Myanmar

Ananta Inle Resort has the luxury of being one of the few hotels situated on the eastern side of beautiful Inle Lake, but what really makes the resort stand out is its authentic and understated atmosphere.

Simple and yet elegant, this 3-star resort offers the same identical, unobstructed views of the lake as its luxury neighbors, but at a much more affordable price. The resort is also situated far enough away from the tourist crowds in Nyaungshwe town to be a peaceful, and yet still close enough if you want to access the town’s key attractions or nightspots.

Ananta Inle Resort has 28 beautifully decorated rooms and the pool offers an amazing view of the lake with the Shan Mountains dominating the skyline. The property is also within easy reach of Heho Airport – a comfortable 45 minutes’ drive on paved roads.

Ananta Inle’s restaurant offers à la carte dining throughout the day with a great selection of local Myanmar, Thai, Chinese and European dishes. Snacks, homemade bread and a selection of deserts make up some of the other menu items, along with a selection of cocktails and an extensive wine list. Daily breakfast boasts a variety of hot and cold fare, which are served as a buffet on busy days.

There is also a bar in the restaurant for those pre-dinner drinks, or you can enjoy a cocktail in the cool of the evening on the Sunset Terrace and watch the golden orb of the sun slide behind the lake.

Ellerton, Kandy, Sri Lanka

Describing itself as a boutique hotel high in the hills above Kandy, Ellerton is surrounded by stunning picture-perfect scenery 2,400 feet above sea level. Once you arrive, you climb a flight of steps, where you are met with red polished floors and a myriad of trinkets from a bygone colonial era. In the background the melodic strains of Beethoven and Mozart can be heard – a perfectly harmonious counterpoint to keep you company while you peruse a book in the hotel’s comfortable lounge.

Ellerton is also known for its liberal stance on pets and currently has two dogs and a cat – an added bonus for those who just love animals. However, be prepared for Sam the Labrador, who is playful and has boundless energy!

Room-wise we recommend the Aurora Bungalow, the Garden Rooms and the highly spacious Valley House 1 – the entrance to which lies through a narrow corridor piled high with fascinating books. The Main House rooms are reserved for those who really like the English country home feel, with an imposing atmosphere – typical of this colonial-era home, which was once a British tea planter’s estate.

To preserve the colonial distinction, some of the rooms – such as Aurora, the Main House, and the Valley House rooms – do not have air conditioning. The Garden Rooms have humidifiers and a lovely view to supplement their more nouveau feel. Even though the climes are generally cool and pleasing, on a hot sunny day the rooms can get a bit warm.

However, if you’re looking for a place with a colonial ambiance, where you can relax by the pool with a book and shake off that busy agenda, then this is the place to be. We also recommend you read Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book while relaxing by the pool, as the stunning surrounds will really bring it to life!

Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel grounds and there are also two dedicated computer terminals in the reception area for guests to use.

Bambu Battambang’s Russey Restaurant, which means ‘bamboo’ in Khmer, boasts a fully-equipped kitchen and serves one of the most comprehensive menus in town, offering local and international cuisine, as well as a range of snacks and desserts. The restaurant and bar are open not just to hotel guests, but also to the public, making Russey a popular eatery on the Battambang restaurant circuit. Food and drinks can be enjoyed on the terrace or in the restaurant’s elegant dining room. The fully stocked bar also offers draught and bottled beers, as well as a comprehensive wine list, cocktails, fruit juices, and shakes.
