Riverboat Cruises, Kalimantan, Indonesia

Tanjung Puting National Park is a place of stunning biodiversity, a protected area of tropical coast and peat-swamp forest in Central Borneo that is home to Camp Leakey and the iconic Bornean orangutan. Accessed only by boat from the busy port of Kumai, along the mangrove-lined Sekonyer River, the company that runs special cruises to the camp has more than 10 years’ experience operating eco-cruises on Kalimantan’s rivers.

Its boat, the 18-meter-long, three-meter-wide KM Sekonyer, is a traditional wooden klotok riverboat – the type used primarily for cabotage along Indonesian rivers. It has three comfortable air conditioned cabins with en suite bathrooms and western-style toilets. The upper viewing deck is completely open, offering wonderful, unimpeded views for wildlife spotting, with comfortable rattan furniture and a dinner table. Each of the cabins has mosquito netting and on the upper deck waterproof blinds with clear window inserts can be lowered to protect against sudden tropical downpours.

Rooms are also fitted with spring mattresses, reading lights, quality sheets, bedcovers, towels, and toiletries, while windows have sliding shutters for privacy. Guests can also charge their phones and cameras at plug sockets installed in the rooms and also on the viewing deck. Highly praised food is served on deck, and a crew of five – along with a knowledgeable English-speaking guide – accompany guests on this riverboat jungle adventure.

The company has plans to launch a second boat in August, the Arut, which will be installed with the latest solar-panel technology, an innovation on boats in Kalimantan that will help to reduce its ecological footprint on the pristine environment.
