Overnight with a Local Family on the Lake

November 30, 2012 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

An authentic home-stay experience with a family living in a stilt house on the famous Tonle Sap Lake.

990 Kampong Khleang homestay

Kompong Khleang is located on the northern lake-edge about 45 Km of Siem Reap Town. This remote area is dotted with wooden houses on 10 meter tall stilts, surrounded by water in the wet season and on the flood plains of the lake in the dry season. You won’t find many other tourists here.

Your trip starts with a wooden boat ride over the river to Tonle Sap. Both sides of the river are lined by  spectacular floating houses, complemented by the sun setting over the horizon. It’s a short trip to your destination – a local family’s house where you’ll spend the night.

You’ll have the opportunity to help the family cook Khmer food, and you can even help sell the prepared dishes in the family’s shop. Many children and wives of the fishermen stop by for food and spices – you can talk with them and  learn more about life here.

Early the next morning, you”ll accompany the fishermen – hopefully you’re lucky and will get a nibble! Bring your catch back to the fish market where the locals sell their fish to the wholesalers.

Before you depart, you’ll sit down for one last meal with your host family – where you can bid them farewell and revel in this truly authentic experience.
