September 5, 2009 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

The construction of the new bridge over the Mekong River, linking Luang Prabang province with the isolated Xayaboury province is expected to commence after the rainy season. The 620 meter long Pak Khone – Tha Deua Bridge, which will be 10.5 meter wide, should be finished within 42 months.

The existing 58 km gravel road, linking the National Highway No 13 in Xieng Ngeun district, Luang Prabang province to the planned location of the new to be constructed Pak Khone – Tha Deua Bridge will be paved and sealed. The new improved road will be around 6 to 7 meters wide with a 1 meter footpath on each side. Quite a unique feature in Laos road network so far.

The Lao government will spend around 159.8 billion kip (US$18.8 million) to fund the road as well as the construction of the bridge.

The Korean Import-Export Bank founded a loan of about US$22.4 million for the construction project.

Upon completion of these road sections in Xayaboury province it is expected, that the province will become a major transit route for tourists traveling from Thailand to Luang Prabang.
