Restart Tourism in Laos: The Sweet Escape

June 27, 2020 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

Like a lot of people, we feel trapped and antsy to just be able to move and travel even for a small escapade. I have several mini-trips planned in my head. I am based in the capital of Laos, Vientiane. I am thinking about going up to Luang Prabang for a few days, maybe even just going somewhere closer like Vang Vieng for the weekend or somewhere in the South, on the Thakhek Loop… My imagination is always running wild and I am already feeling giddy at the thought of traveling.  First up, a trip nearby though!

We drove around 30km east of Vientiane to this very beautiful place,  on the Mekong Riverside. This is the place where Laos and Thailand are the closest, just separated by a tiny part of the Mekong River. The closest Thai airport from Vientiane is located in Udon Thani, just 45 minutes from the border. A lot of local people use that airport to reach Bangkok, rather than directly from Vientiane.

We had a nice lunch and a few beers, chilling and appreciating the fact that Laos had finally come out of lockdown. Just being able to get a big bowl of fresh air and magnificent sunset views over the Mekong was priceless. Vientiane and its surroundings actually have a lot to offer. It is not the most popular destination but if we dig just a little deeper, there are a multitude of travel gems around the capital.
