The Bolaven Plateau: A Land of Waterfalls, Coffee and Adventure

June 17, 2019 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

The Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos, about 40 minutes’ drive from the nearest airport in Pakse – thanks to an excellent new road – is the perfect place to combine pure relaxation, with fun and adventure.

The highlands are home to many waterfalls that welcome visitors for a refreshing swim, nice hikes, and pure nature. A thrilling zip-lining experience crossing one of the most stunning falls with views of the gorge and a jeep safari through coffee plantations, are just two of the highlights.

Khiri Travel’s Mystic Mountain Jeep Safari is an excellent way to see the Bolaven Plateau – riding in the backseat of an old Soviet or US jeep that makes its way across small rivers, through off-road terrain and local farms.

The adventure starts in Paksong, the heart of this coffee growing region,  where our experienced driver and guide take you into the remote areas of the highlands. The guide will give an explanation of the CIA operations in the area during the Vietnam War and you’ll be able to see some of the bomb craters left behind by the US bombing campaign in Laos. He will also share his fascinating memories of the bombings, which he witnessed first-hand.

You then continue on to a remote waterfall where no other tourists will be seen and set up a jungle cooking station to prepare lunch.

Your clients will also learn all about a sustainable coffee plantation from its founder and owner, Mr Khamsone, who is a wealth of knowledge on the subject of coffee growing. He is very active in the promotion of organic coffee and sustainable tourism in Southern Laos, and is frequently sought out for his expertise by international scholars, film crews and NGOs.

The safari ends with a short hike up to a sunset viewpoint, overlooking the nearby plantations and hills – a beautiful spot to sit with a cold drink and contemplate the spectacular panorama, and no better way to end the day!
