The Magical Wakatobi Islands
Until recently the Wakatobi Island’s in Sulawesi Tenggara Province were known primarily for their underwater world, as well as Wakatobi Dive Resort – the only 5-star dive resort in Indonesia. Wakatobi Dive Resort is accessible by private chartered Garuda flight twice weekly from Bali and Khiri Travel who is a partner, will gladly arrange your stay, flights and any pre- or post-itineraries in Sulawesi, Bali or elsewhere Indonesia.
Now that Indonesia’s national carrier, Garuda has started flying to Wangi-wangi – the main island of Wakatobi – accessibility has improved tremendously, thus bringing it within reach of the more pioneering traveler.
While it’s a popular destination for diving, this very isolated group of islands – Wangi-wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko – have so much more to offer. In addition to the beautiful mangrove forests, pristine beaches and the rich, local traditions of the islanders, there is also the extraordinary culture of the Bajo people, who live off the islands’ coast in sea houses on stilts.
Khiri Travel has surveyed this little-visited group of islands and can offer some great multiple-day itineraries. In Wangi-wangi’s, Liya village the people were traditionally led by a king, known local as meantu’u. The Kingdom of Liya was protected by several forts, which can still be seen today. A leisurely walk through the village itself will get you acquainted with the local weaving industry, or you can take a canoe across the bay to visit a warm natural spring. On the neighboring island of Kaledupa, we visit local villagers and learn traditional ways of cooking over a stone fire, followed by a performance of traditional dancing.
