Three reasons to visit Vietnam in 2020

February 24, 2020 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

Vietnam has emerged as one of South East Asia’s prime tourist destinations. The nation is blessed with cultural diversity, natural splendor, and rich culture and history that it is easy to see why it should be on everybody’s travel bucket list. We have put together a few reasons why you should consider Vietnam for your next trip.

Cultural influences

Steeped in centuries-old tradition with many different cultural influences, Vietnam is a country that blends together the old and new. The traditional cultures in the north of the country, especially the mountainous regions, are very different from the modern cultures in the South around Saigon. There are many contrasting religions in the country including traditional Vietnamese folk religions, Buddhism, Catholicism and local religions such as Cao Dai and Hoa Hao. There are also over 54 ethnic groups spread across the country which adds to the complexity and charm of Vietnamese culture.

The largest homegrown religion, Cao Dai, is a relatively new religion that was founded in 1926. Khiri Travel offers day tours from Saigon to learn more about this fascinating religion. The two most important and memorable festivals take place each year on the eighth day of the first lunar month and the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. During these two days, people dress in white and flock to the Cao Dai Holy Palace complex. Here you come face to face with fire-spitting dragons, people dancing in traditional costumes and much, much more. This is truly a unique and unforgettable experience and who knows, you might even be the only foreigner there.

Modern Culture

Vietnam is changing fast and the economic growth the country has enjoyed over the years has not left the traditional lifestyle and local culture unaffected. In contrast to the country’s many ancient traditions and cultural heritage, the Vietnamese have also fervently adopted modern culture with football being one of the prime examples. The game is hugely popular in the country, and whenever the national team plays, the entire country comes out to support them. While international games might not be that common, Khiri Travel can organize a visit to a local football game together with the fan club in Saigon (contact us for possible dates). If football is not your thing, there are many other excursions you can go on if you want to experience Vietnam’s modern culture. Go on a speakeasy tour, explore the small alleyways around town to get a sense of life in these modern cities or why not explore the city on the back of a Vespa and get the adrenaline rush that every local in Hanoi and Saigon experiences on a daily basis. In short, there is so much to do, and you will be spoilt for choice!

Ethnic Groups

Vietnam boasts more than 54 ethnic groups. For those eager to learn more about these ethnic groups, one of the best places to start would be the Vietnamese Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi. Another great way of experiencing the local culture is by visiting the region around Hanoi. North of the city, the mountainous area of Sapa is home to dozens of ethnic minorities. Places like Mai Chau have an incredibly colorful ethnic-cultural background and have become popular amongst locals and foreigners alike. Instead of Mai Chau however, we would recommend Pu Luong, a more ‘off the beaten path’ alternative.

Finally, the Central Highlands is also definitely worth the visit. Having remained untouched by tourism until now, the Central Highlands is still considered to be a real hidden gem. Rich in both culture and natural resources, the area offers unforgettable experiences. Enjoy the natural surroundings, interact with the locals and be amazed by the ancient way of building houses that still exists until this day. Buildings such as the enormous Rong houses are truly unique to this area. There truly are so many things to experience in the Central Highlands. The adventurous types will be delighted to know of the beautiful landscapes, picturesque lakes, national parks, and numerous stunning waterfalls.

There are endless reasons to visit Vietnam. The nation is extremely diverse with a rich culture and history, breathtaking natural beauty and a fast developing and bright future. With Khiri Travel Vietnam you can immerse yourself in this beautiful country and really get a taste for what makes this land so unique and special.
