Thingyan Water Festival: And If Clients Want to Stay Dry?

February 14, 2012 by Khiri Travel |

As in several other countries in Southeast Asia, during Myanmar’s New Year celebration (called Thingyan) people all over the country celebrate the festival by throwing water at each other with buckets, water hoses or water guns. During the New Year period most offices and shops are closed for two weeks in April.

Thingyan

Thingyan is the perfect period to visit Myanmar and get to know the hospitality and friendliness of the people. But what if clients want to stay dry?

If getting soaked in a big street party isn’t your thing, no problem. You can still have a great time in April. Just mention when making a request for a trip that clients wish to avoid the water festivities. Khiri Travel will make sure to visit quieter places such as Bagan, Inle Lake, Kalaw and Ngapali beach during the “water days”. Hey, they might get a few gentle drops of water while entering the hotel, but they will be fine.

Hotels in Ngapali beach are often fully booked during this period by Burmese families avoiding the water and going for a refreshing seaside escape instead. So we advise to book early.

Kyaukme and Hsipaw: New Myanmar Destinations for Adventurers

During the months of March and April temperatures in Myanmar rise quickly, so it’s a good time to visit the cooler, higher areas of the Northern Shan State as it’s no longer cold at night. Khiri Travel Myanmar has created an innovative trip to this remote part of Myanmar combining public transportation and special encounters with hill tribes and the friendly Shan people. Highlights of the trip are a four-hour walking trip through the Hsipaw area, a trip to Palaung tribes who rarely see foreigners, and a train ride over the Gokteik Bridge.

It’s the kind of trip Khiri Travel recommends for anybody who is curious, active and can sacrifice four-star luxury for a ‘hands-on’ experience for a few days.

New Viewpoint Ecolodgein NyaungShwe

After staying on Inle Lake for a night, Khiri Travel recommends staying in NyaungShwe town for an additional one or two nights. A new hotel called the Viewpoint Ecolodge opened in NyaungShwe in December 2011. The feedback Khiri has had from clients has all been positive. “Seeing the real village life passing just across the water from your balcony is an experience that can hardly be found anywhere,” said one client. NyaungShwe is a great base for soft adventure trips by bike or foot in the surrounding areas.

Accordingly, Khiri Travel recommends that you tell your clients to stay a bit longer in the Inle Lake region and include NyaungShwe for some biking, walking or paddling in a canoe on the lake. Then add on an extra day or two in Kalawto visit elephants too.
