Vang Vieng for a perfect escape
A road-trip with Nouane, Country Manager at Khiri Travel Laos, to rediscover Vang Vieng as it’s a good choice for perfect escape.
A couple months ago, I had the opportunity to try the first highway built in Laos, which – when completed next month. This will connect Vientiane to Vang Vieng in a mere hour and a half (compared to the current 3 – 4 hour drive).
I did not expect much about it, but the drive was pleasantly scenic with superb views of mountains and paddy fields, a prelude to what Vang Vieng has to offer…
Living in a landlocked country can sometimes be a bit tough as we do miss the sea and the beach, however, places like Vang Vieng make up for it. This was not my first time visiting but with each visit, I still feel amazed by the beautiful landscape. Yes!, Vang Vieng used to be known for its crazy party life and questionable visitors scene but a few years ago the government started a campaign to get rid of this reputation by shutting down all the bars along the river and all hazardous activities, it has now also become a place where one can go for a peaceful retreat but also where we can find safe adventurous excursions like zip-lining, mountain climbing, rafting…
We stayed in a small guesthouse on the Nam Song River bank. We drove to one of the famous Blue Lagoon sites, had a dip in one of the natural pools, enjoyed a small picnic lunch there, prayed to the guardian of the site, took a few pictures… In the evening, we came back to town and walked down to the Nam Song river to have dinner in one of those wooden rafts built over the water. It was a short and simple getaway, nothing fancy but it meant so much to the soul. It reminded me of why I love doing what I am doing, how proud I am of the beauty of Laos and how eager I am to show it to the world. I cannot wait for the borders to open again and to start receiving more visitors and show off what we have to offer again!
