Vietnam Wants to Be Your Next Beach Destination
Most trips to Vietnam include the most popular destinations: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City. If your travelers have a couple of extra days, we can add a quick visit to the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam. This type of trip can last from 12 to 16 days, depending on your client’s rhythm and pace. Vietnam is a large and varied landscape with many interesting places to discover.
One common oversight is not considering Vietnam for a beach vacation. Most travelers coming to Southeast Asia think of Thailand or Indonesia for that beautiful beach resort; however, Vietnam has some sparkling gems to offer. After all, Vietnam is a coastal country with a spectacular variety of seaside resort and island paradises for all type of travelers and budgets.
As General Manager of Khiri Travel Vietnam, I have put together a selection of our favorite beaches in Vietnam by region:
Phu Quoc – Probably Vietnam’s most famous island
Located off the coast of South Vietnam near Cambodia, Phu Quoc is easily reached by flight from many destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Can Tho and even Siem Reap. Phu Quoc also has the unique distinction of having visa free entry for international travelers arriving by air and staying on the island. The island can also be reached by speedboat from Rach Gia in the Mekong Delta, about 100 km from Can Tho and the delta’s largest floating market at Cai Rang.
Phu Quoc is developing quickly; however, the island still retains its idyllic charm. Exploring by motorbike to find secluded beaches and dining on fresh seafood grilled right on the beach are two ways to spend time in this tropical paradise. Phu Quoc can be visited throughout the entire year, even during July to September when it might rain a little bit each day but not enough to spoil enjoying the beach.
Con Dao – For off the beaten path explorers
The Con Dao Islands are also located off the coast of South Vietnam but much smaller in size than Phu Quoc. Con Son Island is the largest island of this small archipelago and where most of the accommodation facilities are found. Flights depart from Saigon daily during the morning and also from Can Tho certain days of the week.
I traveled to Con Dao almost two years ago and instantly fell in love. I rented a scooter and drove from one point of the island to the other. The landscape, the wildlife, the pristine beaches, the historic and emblematic monuments, and the seafood all make Con Dao a unique place that is a beach plus more.
Not the most traveled destination in Vietnam, Con Dao is special and quiet. Options for accommodation on Con Dao are very limited, mostly only 2 and 3-star hotels and resorts with very basic facilities. On the other hand, the spectacular Six Senses Con Dao owns one of the most beautiful beaches of the island and offer 5-star accommodations for our most high-end clients.
The best time to travel to Con Dao is from April to October, which also corresponds with the best visibility for diving and snorkeling adventures.
Nha Trang – For those searching for a comfortable beach holiday with great facilities
Nha Trang has been popular for many years and the development of the area is evident. Beach resorts, seaside restaurants, craft breweries, water sports outfitters and some historical sightseeing makes Nha Trang a destination with something for everyone– from high-end to budget and for families or honeymoon couples. This coastal city is accessible from many points in Vietnam such as Hanoi, Saigon and Da Nang.
Doc Let , located only 50 km from Nha Trang is probably one of Vietnam’s best spots for sparkling white sand and clear turquoise water. I was lucky enough to travel to Doc Let last year and instantly fell in love. I stayed at Some Days of Silence Resort & Spa, an apt name for this relaxing escape. The beachfront room was like a modern bungalow with an amazing view.
Doc Let takes about two hours from Nha Trang’s airport and only eighty minutes from Nha Trang City. If your clients are travelling to Nha Trang, don’t forget to suggest Doc Let to them because everyone needs their own piece of paradise.
Best time to travel to Nha Trang is all year around! At the end of the year weather can be a little bit unpredictable, but overall, most of the year it has really nice weather and is a great antidote to other beach destinations that do not have the same year round sunny days and blue skies especially in July to September.
Quy Nhon – For adventurous travelers
Mainly a seaport town, Quy Nhon beaches are worth a visit especially for your travelers looking for a really off beaten path destination with no other tourists around. The town has a coastline of 42 km where the prettier and more secluded beaches are at the northern end.
Bai Tram Hideaway Resort has located about 50 km from Quy Nhon in a private bay on the coastline of Phu Yen Province. This beach resort is located about 45 minutes from Quy Nhon and 90 minutes from Tuy Hoa airports by car.
Saving the best for last, the Hoi An and Da Nang coastline always makes a great impression. Last year, I found a secluded beach between Hoi An and Da Nang where I was the only guest. Mr. Hoa, the owner, gave me the warmest welcome and we spent a few hours talking and sharing a couple of drinks. I went for a swim and looking back to the beach, I saw the most amazing scene of the beach framed by the beautiful Marble Mountains and blue skies above. How perfect!
North Vietnam is better known for its hill tribe villages, rice terraces, and mountainous roads. However, think again…of Ha Long Bay and the less popular and quieter Lan Ha Bay. I will always remember my trip to Ha Long and the many times we jumped from the junk into the water! We spent hours sunbathing, swimming, jumping from the boat and discovering secret spots on the shore around Ha Long Bay.
Maybe Vietnam is not the most well-known beach destination in Asia, but with all the places we described here, why not suggest one of these great destinations for your client’s next itinerary?
