Vietnam’s Lantern Festival and other Colorful Events
In Vietnam, you can find many festivals taking place in different parts of the country throughout the year. Some are typically religious, while others are rooted in tradition and culture. These celebrations are attracting a growing number of international sports visitors each year.
One of the most popular celebrations is the breathtaking Hoi An Lantern Festival. It doesn’t matter what time of year you are planning a trip to Vietnam, this festival is organized each month to celebrate the full moon. It is believed that the Buddha was born during the full moon: so Buddhists pay respect each month following the lunar calendar.
During the festival, in the cool of the evening, many multi-colored lanterns adorned with candles are set afloat on the Thu Bon River. This tradition ushers in good luck and fortune for the coming month. Fluorescent lights in the city are turned off and only the lustrous glow from the sparkling lanterns shine in Hoi An. Combine that with the full moon, the atmosphere is truly breathtaking.
As vehicles and bicycles are not allowed in Hoi An’s Old Quarter, visitors can wander around and take in the peaceful ambiance of the celebrations. Along the river, street performers hold poetry readings, folk dances, and theater performances giving the whole event a lively atmosphere. Locals play board games in front of their houses, while others gather to take part in Bai Choi – a musical version of bingo.
There are lots of street food you can try too. Food vendors set up shop along the river selling delicious vegetarian cuisine and other popular dishes. It’s a good opportunity to try some tasty moon cakes, or shop at the busy night markets. Celebrations usually wind down at around 10.00 pm.
In Vietnam, the lunar calendar is often used to mark these traditional events, which can make setting the dates for these festivals a bit tricky when using a Western-Gregorian calendar. However, our agents will confirm with our local partners making it easier to work out when they will take place each year.
