Visit a Natural Retirement Home for Elephants in Myanmar

Trek Kalaw Elephants

White elephants in Myanmar are symbolic. Whenever one is found every now in then in the forests it is made a state affair. However, the normal grey elephant — which spends his life working in the forests for his mahout — needs to be taken care of during his retirement too. Khiri Travel Myanmar offers a day excursion to the villages near Kalaw in Shan State to visit an elephant conservation project.

A while ago some young tourism professionals originating from Kalaw decided to set up a project in Kalaw in Shan State that is focused on protecting the nature, elephants and traditions of local people living in an area close to Kalaw. In a big part of this private protected forest nature can grow undisturbed creating a natural habitat for animals that would otherwise be easily hunted down and killed. The project creates a natural environment for Myanmar elephants from this part of the world. The initiative helps the local population escape the vicious circle of poverty by offering them education and micro finance.

Our guides, specialized in elephant conservation, take visitors for a rewarding day in the forest. We encounter elephants, their mahouts and people living in the surrounding areas.

Depending on guests’ arrival time and how long they want to walk through the forest (walks from 30 minutes up to 4-5 hours are possible) travelers will find themselves in the natural surroundings of an Asian jungle. A delicious lunch with local specialties (often of Nepalese origin) will be served in a traditional village, in the jungle, or in camp.

After lunch it is time to help the mahout wash and feed the elephant. We take a walk back in the afternoon to the main road and continue by car back to Kalaw town.

The Kalaw Elephant Conservation Project is supported by our charity arm, Khiri Reach.
