Volcano Adventures in Indonesia

September 8, 2017 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: , ,

Consisting of 17,000 Islands, Indonesia certainly has plenty of coastlines to explore for some world-class surfing and scuba diving destinations. Additionally, being located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and harboring around 130 active volcanoes, Indonesia is by far the most volcanically active place on the planet.

With notable eruptions such as Krakatoa in 1883, known as the world’s loudest sound ever heard in modern history, and Mount Tambora in 1815, the huge eruption that caused global cooling or a “volcanic winter” aftermath in Europe and North America, Indonesia has an interesting natural history of erupting mountains. Flores Island’s Kelimutu contains three crater lakes, each of which is a different color. Lombok Island’s Mount Rinjani is the second highest volcano in the country and poses a great opportunity for trekking. For your travelers wanting a serious challenge, there are 2 or 3-day trek options available.

Java has the most volcanoes of any island in the world with more than 40 active ones. Mt. Merapi, only 19 km away from Yogyakarta, the center of Indonesian culture, is the most active. The name Merapi means “mountain of fire” in the Indonesian language. Mt. Bromo is maybe the most well known Javanese volcano due to its famously barren surroundings that resemble the lunar surface. It is also popular for hiking or jeep tours for its impressive landscape.

Nearby Mt. Merapi is Ijen volcano, unique for its large acidic crater lake of the most beautiful turquoise color. The caldera is also known as “Blue Fire Crater” for the nighttime appearance of a blue flame generated by the combustion of sulfuric gases escaping from active vents along the lakeside. It is a truly amazing sight and draws large numbers of domestic and international tourists.

The escaping gases deposit molten sulfur that turns bright yellow when it cools. Miners can be seen breaking this yellow rock into pieces and carrying upwards of 100 kg out of the crater on their backs. Your travelers can observe the miners working and have a closer look at the crater lake’s remarkable colors present in both the daylight and darkness.

There is something about the raw nature of active volcanoes that inspires excitement and awe. Indonesia is a captivating destination for experiencing all the beauty and power of active volcanoes.
