Where to Stay in Asia – Our top picks for November

November 20, 2019 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: ,

Here are our picks for places to stay in the month of November. Immerse yourself in the tropical surroundings on your next vacation!

Ancient Hue Garden Houses, Hue, Vietnam

Ancient Hue Garden Houses are located between the Hue Imperial City and Thien Mu Pagoda. Overlooking the perfume river, it’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon while getting a glimpse into the ancient Vietnamese lifestyle. The design of this small and intimate Mandarin style home was carefully laid out using Feng Shui principles.

Balance within the garden is achieved with winding walkways from the ponds, enjoy the tranquil ponds and lush greenery as you soak in the positive energy from the surrounding environment. As the original family still maintains the estate and preserves its traditional roots, they graciously share their personal family history with you as you walk around their estate.

The Ancient Hue house consists of five sections with a total of eight private rooms: they are constructed from ancient hardwood nestled around the main pond. Each section is designed with its own theme in mind. We recommend dining at the adjoining restaurant, Kim Long. They serve traditional Vietnamese-Chinese cuisine and sometimes host royal feasts in the evenings. Feel like an emperor in the restaurant’s lounge and bar.

FCC Angkor, Managed by Avani, Siem Reap, Cambodia

“Feel at Home, in the heart of Angkor.”

Located in the heart of Siem Reap along the river, this old world, French colonial building has been recently renovated with modern luxuries. The hotel still preserves the warm-rustic atmosphere with rattan and hardwood accents. As the residence of the former French Governor, there is an air of relaxed luxury when you stroll around the property. Lemongrass, palm trees, and other indigenous evergreens make it a tranquil oasis in the middle of the city. The hotel is walking distance to the Siem Reap market and old town center: it’s perfect for exploring the city after enjoying a freshly-brewed cup of coffee and breakfast.

The antique decor pays homage to the property’s illustrious past and takes you on a journey back in time. The saltwater pool is also magnificent using natural stone. Relax in the evening at the outdoor bar, beautifully-tiled and surrounded by the lush tropical garden. Guests also enjoy the rooftop bar with a spectacular view of the river promenade. The Mansion restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while snacking on a plate of Khmer grilled tapas. They also serve modern French cuisine alongside Khmer favorites, such as fish amok.

Sala Done Khone, Laos

Sala Don Khone hotel is located in the heart of Don Khone island near the Old French Bridge. The main property was built around an original French-colonial building from the late 1800s. Now named “The French Heritage Villa,” it once welcomed many senior officers from the Mekong Exploration Commission, including Mr. Paul Dumer, the former governor of French Indochina.

The property is a 3 stars hotel with a rustic colonial charm. Located just at the banks of the Mekong River, the hotel offers rooms in five different stylings: one of which is the Floating Studio built right on top of the water. They are eco-friendly with water treatment systems and perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sunset.

Guests can also enjoy swimming in one of the two pools available on the property or swim near the Khon Pa Soi Waterfall. Kayaks are also available for rent to explore the Mekong river.

The newer eco-rooms are built of clay and eco-friendly materials: at least 80% of the room is made from recycled materials in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint. While the French Studios were originally part of the French hospital, they have been renovated and fitted with air-conditioning, modern facilities, and feature a large balcony.

Amangalla in Galle, Sri Lanka

Back in 1684, next to the Dutch Reformed Church, the Dutch Commanders at the Galle Fort decided to build a headquarters for their soldiers. It is this building, which has endured for centuries and stood the test of time, that has become the majestic Amangalla. From a bygone era, located within the ramparts of the Galle Fort, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the hotel has immaculately and beautifully preserved its old-world charm.

With its last incarnation as the New Oriental Hotel, the front of the building remained true to its original form. As you walk on the hardwood floors and through the archways, the property will take you back in time. Duran Duran fans might remember seeing this hotel from their “Save a Prayer” music video, that was shot at the New Oriental Hotel in 1982.

The 31 Rooms and Suites are connected by a two-story Garden House. As you gaze upon the thick-solid-roof beams, antique furniture, all the way down to the silver service, soak up the history and re-live the heritage of old Ceylon. Experience the world-renowned hospitality and luxuries of “Aman” while paying homage to the colonial marvel of Galle Fort at Amangalla.
