Your Must-Try Eats in Cambodia
There are some dishes that shouldn’t be missed when visiting the Kingdom of Cambodia. Here we list them.
Fish Amok – the one everybody talks about
It’s a fish mousse with coconut milk and a type of curry paste (kroeng) and numerous herbs and spices. The local version tends to be more ‘soupy’ than the more curry-looking one that can be found in western restaurants.
Kdam Chaa – Khmer fried crab
Although not a frequently consumed dish, but rather one saved for more special occasions, the friend crab is worth a mention for its wondrous taste. The best Kdam Chaa is to be found in the eastern seaside town of Kep where you’ll find tourists and locals from Phnom Penh and beyond making the trip down to the town’s teeming crab market to try fresh crabs. The dish regularly features the famous ‘Kampot pepper’ completing the taste experience.
Ang Dtray-Meuk – grilled squid is another seaside food worth a mention
Frequently available from vendors in Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep, the locally sourced fresh squid is a favorite among locals. Brushed with lime-juice and served dipped in a lime and pepper sauce, this is a really nice and inexpensive dish.
Bai Sach Chrouk – is also worth a mention
Although essentially pork and rice (sometimes featuring an egg on top), no two preparations of this dish are the same and the dish is ideal for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
A true taste of Khmer cuisine can be found at Friends and Romdeng restaurants in Phnom Penh, and Marum in Siem Reap. They offer a combination of forgotten provincial recipes as well as contemporary Cambodian cuisine. Travelers can also have a chance to try aping (fried spiders).
