Welcome to Indochina!
Indochina is a fusion of cultures and people, a melting pot of ethnic minorities, languages and customs. Despite their close proximity, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos all offer a totally unique travel experience. Creating meaningful local encounters is crucial to what we do and Indochina is a fantastic destination to enable that special interaction.
Get immersed in authentic local culture in Laos and discover a traditional lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of years. Feel grandeur and perspective in Cambodia at remote, under explored, ancient temple complexes and a people even stronger than Angkor itself. Be fascinated by Vietnam’s variety of experiences, from bustling streets to manicured rice paddies and a cuisine that is as diverse as the country is.
With a vision of Indochina that combines 3 countries into 1 destination, we look forward to engaging travelers and sharing with them our passion for exploring this incredible region.
Regional Director Indochina
For over fifty years, France ruled Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as Indochina, a term that also recognizes the influences of India and China on this region. Today, each country is identified by one main nationality but they all share small populations of ethnic minorities living in remote mountainous areas.
The principal religion of Indochina remains Buddhism although there has been influence from Chinese Confucianism in Vietnam. French missionaries, once widespread throughout the region, converted many people in Vietnam to Catholicism. This is when Cao Dai’s origin began as well.
The most visible French influences are the colonial architecture and the ubiquitous café (coffee) and pain (baguette). The common colonial influences in the region’s dynamic urban centers and today’s easy travel connections make this compact region easy to tour as one destination.
For example, travelers can combine a visit to see colonial era remnants in Laos’ 4,000 Islands with ecotourism in Cambodia and adventures in Vietnam’s lush Mekong Delta– with overnight stays in renovated, boutique accommodations. Alternatively, travelers can explore the region for more hidden cultures such as the Jarai in Vietnam, the Hmong in Laos and the Khmer Loeu highland people of Cambodia. The three countries combine to make one attractive package.
In Cambodia, Khiri has a young, enthusiastic, highly-educated 18 member team working from offices in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Flavie Thevenet, our French Country Manager, is a travel enthusiast who altogether lived in Cambodia for over ten years. She landed back in Cambodia’s tourism sector in 2015 after a side trip to Laos. Our Khmer staff hail from Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, and Kampot, and some have traveled internationally as well.
Our core team comprises 13 full-time staff spread across Khiri Travel Laos’ offices in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Pakse. The vast majority of our team members are Lao with one German in the mix. Other than Lao, our team members can speak English and German.
Khiri has two offices in Vietnam — Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City — with 10 team members working throughout the country. Our service stands out from the start with our seamless booking process — our sales people quickly respond, usually the same day, to quote and program requests. We are very flexible with our cancellation policy, and when clients are in-country our dedicated customer relations team provides a warm welcome and are available to offer assistance at any time, day or night.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my relationship with everyone at Khiri and think your commitment to service, product quality/ingenuity, and sustainability is unique to the industry. I’ve worked with hundreds of DMC’s and it is truly rare to find this combination of qualities so consistently implemented across an entire brand.
