Hiking to Villages and Temples of Rural Kandy

October 30, 2014 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under: ,

Take a break from the main tourist attractions, slip on your walking shoes and take a stroll into the surrounding villages to discover the authentic essence of Kandy. A short drive from the bustling city centre of Kandy, you arrive in a small village where you embark on a wondrous hike that connects you to three legendary temples, Embekka Devalaya, Gadaladeniya Vihara and Lankatilaka Vihara, hidden gracefully away in the hills. The walk begins at Galadaldeniya temple, where your guide will unveil its proud Buddhist heritage that dates back to the reign of King Bhuvanekabahu IV in the 14th century.

You also stop to enjoy a bit of refreshment and local hospitality at a neighborhood home, where you can enjoy fresh coconut juice. Nearby, there’s also a small shop where you can grab some home-baked snacks for the road, including lemon puffs and ginger biscuits! You will be surprised by the abundance and variety of fruits, vegetables and spices that your guide will point out along the way. And it’s impossible not to notice the eager waves and smiles of locals and their children as you pass by!
