Team Sri Lanka Back on the Road after a Year

March 30, 2021 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under:

After 12 months which have been challenging, we have now started to see the silver linings of the dark clouds. Sri Lanka opens its borders for tourists in late January. The safety protocols have continuously relaxed since then; now it’s time to get back on the road, start exploring new places and develop new products to prepare for better times ahead.

Let’s be honest; we are all in this industry for the perks that it gives us in staying at lovely places and exploring the destinations we are promoting to our clients and, most of all, without paying for it! After all, our first love has been creating new experiences; getting back on the road and doing that is the best motivation for all of us.

We have decided to visit W15 Hanthana Estate for the first night, who generously invited us to host. Meanwhile, this is the latest Luxury Boutique property that has opened up, and the review and photos from the domestic travelers looked very promising. Since we wanted to try out an easy hike to the Hanthana mountain range with their naturalist, we made a very early start from Colombo at 3.30 am to make sure we reach the property by 7 am. It’s about a 30mins scenic drive from the Kandy town through winding roads.

The first impression as soon as we arrived was just WoW with the stunning views from the verandah. After a quick cup of coffee on the lawn, we started the hike with Sanath, their very knowledgeable naturalist, as well as a great hiking companion. We thought a 2-hour hike would be a walk in the park for us. BUT we were WRONG! We forgot to factor in that we were doing a hike for the first time in more than a year. We did take a few breaks in between and finally managed to reach the top.

After returning to the property, we had a little snack, and it was time for a ride on their lovely Series 3 Land Rover through the tea plantations. Then we did a short walk through a forest patch to one of the locations where the movie “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” was filmed. It was such a fantastic experience.

We returned to the hotel for a delicious rice and curry lunch, and then it was time to have a dip in the pool with some Gin and Tonics while enjoying the views. The next surprise served a lovely High-Tea on the lawn with majestic sunset as the backdrop.

After enjoying a delicious dinner, we slept like babies and the next day enjoyed breakfast with a view. It was one of the most challenging check-outs we’ve ever done since none of us wanted to leave this magical place. While we are a bunch who have been pampered a lot by hotels, this is probably the only property that had the WoW factor in every element from the time we arrived and until we left. With stunning views, great outdoor activities, and incredible food and service, plenty of chilling locations within the property (incredibly the outdoor fireplace ideal for evening drinks with the cozy weather) elegance written all over the design. We are not exaggerating, but this property raises the bar for luxury boutique properties in Sri Lanka.

In our following newsletter, you will hear more about the latest signature experience we designed and tried out the next day. For more details, please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
