Chin state on the western side of Myanmar close to the Indian border is truly one of the last frontiers and any adventurers dream. Look at any map and you will discover the roads ends halfway your end destination and indeed it’s a trip through an area you can only reach on foot. We are connecting the ancient kingdoms of Bagan and Mrauk U during this adventurous overland trip that takes 7 days and offers fantastic scenery, remote traditional Chin villages, plantations, jungle, river valleys and of course the fabled ancient cities of Bagan and Mrauk U.

For the first time in centuries it is allowed to travel through this forgotten part of Myanmar where time stood still and modern day facilities like telephone, electricity or running water are left behind for a few days – not even to mention internet.

The facilities during the trip are very, very basic in local houses. Mosquito nets and blankets are provided, bathroom facilities are either at a communal village well or in the river while the food will be rice, noodles and locally prepared meals by your guide

Please advise which hotel you are staying in Bagan

Day 1:

Bagan – Kanpetlet (Mt Victoria National Park)

Meals: L D

Leave your main luggage behind as it will be send separately to Mrauk U – only pack luggage in a small backpack for the coming days.

An early start as we leave around 6.30 am from the hotel in Bagan. We drive by 4-wheel drive car and slowly leave the “dry zone” behind us. During the morning we pass several so called “dry creeks” which are river beddings that are dry most of the year and due to lack of proper bridge we have to drive by car through the river bedding.

After lunch time we slowly start climbing in the mountains and you will notice a drop in temperature. We arrive in Kanpetlet and visit the National Park (where we can climb in the afternoon to the top of the mountain which is over 3000 meter high – about 2 hours climb on foot) and visit the local market.

Overnight in simple hotel in Kanpetlet

Day 2:

Kanpetlet – Matupi

Meals: B L D

We continue driving deeper into Chin State passing occasionally a village but spend most of the day driving through forest and scenic roads.

On arrival in Matupi we drive towards the famous 7 steps waterfall (the beginning of the Lay Myo River) and walk towards the waterfall. Scenic rice terraces and mountains mark the way.

Visit the waterfall (possible to swim) and continue by car to the simple guesthouse in Matupi.

Overnight at guesthouse in Matupi (shared bathroom facilities)

Day 3:

Matupi – Amswe – Gwe Zar – Thein Zar – Hton Nar (trekking – about 20 km)

Meals: B L D

Early morning breakfast at the local market (local breakfast like mohinga).

Around 07:00 departure by car or by motorbikes with drivers (1 passenger per motorbike) to the starting point of the trekking and continue on foot for about 5 km. Arrive around 10:00 in Amswe village.

We continue on foot to Gwe Zar village (9 km) where we arrive around 13:00 and have a simple lunch. The scenery is very diverse as you find yourself sometimes walking over the ridge of the mountains with panoramic views over the valley and sometimes through jungle or through rice plantations in the mountains

In the afternoon continue for another 6 kilometers to Hton Nar village where we will stay for the night in a local house. A simple local dinner is prepared by the guide.

Overnight in a local house (bamboo mats, mosquito net and blankets provided).

Day 4:

Hton Nar – Mardu – Welu – trekking (18 km walking)

Meals: B L D

Early morning breakfast

We start in the early morning and walk to Mardu village (2 km) and continue to We Lu village (12 km) where we have lunch. Enjoy a scenery with beautiful vistas over the Chin Hills passing bamboo plantations, rice fields, thick forest as well as open fields.

We stay overnight in a local house in We Lu village

Day 5:

We Lu – Htin Khaung – Lone Ton (trekking 18 km)

Meals: B L D

Early morning breakfast

In the morning we have a walk of about 10 km to Htin Khaung village which is a beautiful traditional Chin village flanked with traditional Chin storage houses, a square and a church. There are still several chin women who have their face tattooed with intrinsic patterns – apparently a tradition from the past to make the women look “too bizarre” to be taken away by the kings of the Bagan empire.

After lunch we walk about 8 km to Lone Ton village where we stay for the night.

Overnight in local house in the village.

Day 6:

Lone Ton – Khapo Chay – boat trip to Than Chaung Wah (trekking 16 km – boat trip about 3 hours)

Meals: B L D

Early morning breakfast

We are going to leave the Chin hills and have a 8 km trek downhill to the banks of the Than Chaung River where a private boat is waiting for us to continue the trip by boat.

The first few hours we pass some rapids – later in the afternoon the river gets wider and calmer.

We arrive at the end of the day in a traditional Chin village (Than Chaung Wah) on the bank of the river where our guides prepare a great meal for us.

Overnight in local house in the village.

Day 7:

Than Chaung village – boat trip to Sun Oo – continue by car to Mrauk U

Meals: B

Early morning breakfast

We continue by boat for about 6 hours and arrive at the jetty near Mrauk U where a local car is waiting for us to drive in about 30 minutes to the historical temple city of Mrauk U leaving a great adventure behind us.

We suggest you to spend 2 or 3 nights in Mrauk U to explore the ancient temples and then continue by boat on the Kaladan River in about 3-4 hours to Sittwe and take the same day a domestic flight from Sittwe airport to Yangon.
